Product Information

I am a ditz...

... at heart still.  I completely forgot to pick a winner for the stamp set from last week!  Der.  I am so sorry.  But better late than never.  The winner of the Close To My Heart stamp set is Holly!  I will email you. :)

Hey... if I owe anyone a prize or CD of Keith's and you haven't gotten it yet, please email me.  My greatest fear is that something gets lost in the mail and someone never gets it.  Would hate for that to happen!

A few random things...

On my post from yesterday, a few people asked what white pen I used.  It was the white Sharpie pen.  Worked pretty well.

Someone also asked if you can use Cuttlebug embossing folders with the Big Shot.  I believe you can.  I would recommend doing a google search - there is likely even a youtube video on it.

I have gotten emails about the yummy silk ribbon.  It is from Creative Impressions - I believe you can buy it from their site!

Want some amazing inspiration?  Be sure to watch Hero Arts Blog this week.  Shari is sharing some amazing stuff.  Wow.

Just a quick card share using a new Hero Arts stamp.  I did this for the catalog work but didn't like how it turned out so I never sent it in. :)  It is a transparent Hero Arts card over a Chocolate Hero Arts notecard.  Yum.  Love that look.  (The card just took a turn for the worse when I started embellishing... hee. :)

The card to go with the page... and a giveaway!

Back to that old saying of mine: "Every time you make a page, go ahead and make a matching card."  Might as well since you have the stuff out!

This is the card to go with the page I did for 2Peas using Close To My Heart productsCTMH is wonderful - they make high quality goodies and are incredibly generous.  Simply good people.  I like that!  This is a card I used with my leftover/unused pieces.

060708 CTMH Card
All supplies from Close To My Heart.  For more details, and a matching layout, look HERE.

And, since CTMH is so generous, I ended up with two of my favorite sets - the Spot On Backgrounds.  (It was used for the the background on this card.)  If you leave a comment here by 11:59pmEDT on June 20th (you have a long time!), I will draw a random winner to send this set to!  In it, tell me what your favorite TV show is.  (I am looking for something new to watch.)

Have a good one!

Enabling Day... and a giveaway!

I love to enable. :)  Just ask Jana.  Iphones, Cuttlebugs, Cricuts, stamps... you name it, I like to enable.  But I also will be the first to tell you not to waste your money on something.  I only enable I things that I really love and think others would love, too.  :)

So, I think every once in awhile I will do Enabling Days.  Where I share some fun links and products.  (Yes, I am a dork. But enabling is even more fun when you share some good stuff, right?  Keep reading... :)

Enabling #1: Etsy
I love love love etsy.com.  If you have never been there, I warn you.  It is 100% addictive.  I love to support the sellers here - it is all handmade stuff.  I love that.  I will share one of my favorite purchases: THIS stamp.  I don't think she has this one for sale now, but I bet if you emailed her she would list one for you.  I love it.

Enabling #2: Costco Printing
Ahhhh.  Costco printing.  It is *almost* as wonderful as my watching Rob Lowe on Brothers and Sisters.  Hee.  (Isn't he hot?!)  Really - Costco has fabulous printing and good prices. You can even have them mailed to you or other people.  From what I understand, you don't even need a Costco near you.  You just load pictures online and have them mailed.  The best part?  8x12 prints. I love the look of huge photos on pages.  This is an old layout from a year ago, but I thought I would pull it up for Father's Day.  Costco rocks.

Dad
Layout from Creativity, Inc.
Supplies:
Autumn Leaves stamps, buttons and font (Uncle Charles - named after my mom's uncle :)
Versmark Ink
Memories Ink
Marvy Punches
Other: string and a photo to melt a momma's heart

Enabling #3: Kraft Paper
One thing I learned from my favorite scrapbooker, Cathy Blackstone: always use Kraft paper on a page whenever you are using bright colors.  I just helps to ground it and not make it overwhelming.  So, I have been using Hero Arts Kraft notecards a lot.  I love that the envelopes match perfectly and that the color is a bit more kraft-y than other Kraft cardstocks.  But, I craved bigger sheets. I was THRILLED to find that Hobby Lobby sells 12x12 packs of a kraft paper just like Hero's notecards... and it is inexpensive!  Now, I will be the first to encourage people to go to their local stores over chains (we want those smaller stores to stay open!), but sometimes there are things that you can only get at Hobby Lobby.  The cool thing?  Whenever they have a 50% off paper sale, this stuff is even cheaper.  (Warning: If you live in Cincinnati, don't bother trying the Fields Ertel store... I wiped them out.  Hee! :)

Kraft

Let's do a giveaway! Just leave a comment on this post by 11:59pmEDT Sunday night and I will pick a random winner to send a pack of this Kraft goodness to.  In your post, just say what country or state you are from - I love hearing all the amazing places you stampers are!

OK... off to waste some time on etsy.  Hugs!

Q&A's, How-To and such...

Hey!  Had a few questions I thought I would answer.  And, along the way, I will share a page and two cards.

Q: I have a quick question about that Ranger inking tool you use- how often do you change the (foam)inking part...do you have to have a different one for different colors? Thanks!

A: This is one of my favorite tools.  And, even if you aren't into distressing, it is a fab tool for inking.  Nothing gives better, more-even results.  I have a video coming up in a few days showing an example of using it in a non-distressing way.  But this is it.  And yes, I have two packs of the replacement foam applicators so that I can use one for every color.  Works great. :)

Q: Love the card - how did you do the stamp?? Did you use markers before stamping? Or use a white ink and then color in with watercolor pencils?  (This is from the previous post.)

A: I should have explained it, huh?  Sorry!  I stamped it in solid pink.  Then I drew over the body with brown pencil.  I added yellow in the holes on the wings.  Finally, I added red shading.  Easy as can be! :)  Here are two cards using that same technique of using colored pencils to enhance stamped images.

Q: I was just wondering, can you cut any clear stamp? Or just the ones from hero arts?

A: You can cut any clear stamp.  Basically, you are cutting on the extra plastic - not the raised plastic that stamps.  So, you can't hurt them by doing this - I promise! :)  As far as quality, I highly recommend stamps that are made in the USA.  They are made with a completely different material than almost (if not all) that are made in China.  The US ones are much better quality, stamp much better and will last longer.  Also, the China ones contain a known carcinogen.  (Or so I have been told.)  So, I prefer US ones.  There are many companies who do US ones... most are from stamping companies.

I will be back tomorrow to answer more questions and share a video.  Have a great night.

Mini Cards

(Before I go on, be sure to check Laura's awesome blog.  Turns out she is a use-your-scraps-for-cards girl, too!  She is amazing.  Look HERE.)

OK... mini cards.  I am currently addicted to making bitty greetings.  Generally, I just cut a card in half, resulting in a card about 2.75"x4.25".  I still put it in a regular envelope since the PO doesn't like anything smaller than 3.5"x5".  Here is one I did a few weeks ago, which is very inspired by the amazing Shari HERE.

052608 Hello House

Supplies:
Hero Arts stamps (house/greeting & sun), gems and notecard
Bo Bunny patterned paper
Fiskars corner rounder
Cuttlebug
Colored pencils and gamsol
Diamond Stickles

By the way, isn't that Bo Bunny paper the cutest?  The Almond dot is the one I use most - it is the perfect neutral-yet-a-bit-of-interest paper for any project.  It is magical. :)  You can find it HERE, along the other colors.

I have gotten a lot of emails about getting good scallop edges for pages.  I personally LOVE the Doodlebug trims.  They have a petite scallop, which is great on cards and pages.  And you can get the colored ones and have the option of using the back, which is always white.  Fun stuff.  You can find them HERE.

Before I head on to email, a word of warning: there will be some serious enabling coming up soon.  I finally installed my new toy.  :)

Take care!

Inks

Good evening!

I have gotten lots of questions about inks.  I thought I would share a bit here about the inks I like for certain things, etc.  However, every stamper is different.  A lot of it depends on personal preference.  So I will just give you a little info about each. :)  Keep in mind - I am not getting into the technical stuff - there is a lot of that already out there.

Here we go...

Inks_2

Dye ink is the type of ink that you normally think of when you think of a stamp pad - a smooth pad.  It dries quickly and absorbs into the paper giving solid images.  I use a black dye ink for all my black stamping - Black Memories Ink.  This gives a very "black" image that I feel is crisp and clean.  It dries quickly and stays put, so it is perfect for any coloring I do.  For brown, I like Memories ArtPrint Brown ink... I like the slightly red tone to it.  For colored dye inks, I like Ranger's Adirondack.  They have delicious colors and are high quality.  Some people try dye inks and are turned off by a sometimes "splotchy" look that you get immediately.  However, as it absorbs, it almost always smoothes out and ends up looking good. :)  I know that many people like the Stampin' Up inks, but I tend to get my hands inky with the ink case that flips.

I should also mention here that I love to stamp with Tim Holtz's Distress Inks.  I don't distress much, but I tell ya, the colors of these inks are delicious and the resulting stamped image is gorgeous.  Gorgeous.  I feel these are a must have, especially Peeled Paint (green), Walnut Stain (a great true brown) and Worn Lipstick (pink).

On the other side of the spectrum are pigment inks. Pigment ink pads usually look like little sponges.  To be honest, I don't use them a ton.  I personally find it harder to get a crisp image with pigment ink.  However, since pigment inks kinda "sit on the surface" of the paper instead of absorbing into it, you do have some advantages.  First, whatever the image looks like when you first stamp it is the same it will look when it dries.  Also, it takes longer to dry.  This means you can heat emboss with it.  Really, I only use pigment inks in two cases: when I want to heat emboss or when there is a yummy color that only comes in pigment ink (such as Versacolor Cyan or Bamboo).  My favorite pigment inks are Colorbox and Versacolor.  I like to get the smaller ink pads since it is easier to multi-ink stamps.

In between pigment and dye inks are chalk inks.  (They are called chalk inks because they stamp an image that looks like pastel chalks.  Or so they say.)  Overall, my favorite ink to use for stamping colored images is Colorbox Chalk Ink.  I really like the colors it comes in and that when you stamp it you get a muted, rich look.  I simply love the stamped look.  They dry a bit slower than dye so you can blend if you want, but dry much faster than pigment.  And they are slow to need re-inking.  The queues are so easy to use in their cat's eyes shape.  My favorites?  Primary, Chocolates and Blueberries (love the brown shades here) and Pumpkin Patch.  I just love them.  (Have I said that yet??  Hee...)  There are a few certain colors that I like so much that I use the full-size pads often: Dark Brown, Olive Pastel and Lime Pastel.  Yum...

As for other inks: Staz-On inks are great for stamping on anything not paper: buttons, transparencies, etc.  White and Black are musts.  (Keep in mind that white Staz-On comes with a re-inker for a reason: you should re-ink it very often.  I do so before almost every use.)  This stuff stays put, but I found that Hero's cleaner can take it off all smooth surfaces I have tried.

Versamark is another I use very often.  It just does a watermark image... like a clear pigment ink.  Sprinkle on embossing powder and heat and the image intensifies - love this.

Ranger's Resist ink is fabulous for doing resist.  (Stamp the image with the resist ink on glossy white paper.  Then rub dye or chalk ink over it and the resist ink "resists" the added color, leaving a ghost-like image.  Very cool.)  You can do resist with Versamark, but you have to let it dry completely.  So, I like to have the Ranger pad.

I also like to stamp with acrylic paints for a "messy" look.  Recently I got rid of ALL my bottles except Ranger's Dabbers.  These things ROCK.  I won't use anything else since these are so easy and come in great colors.

Someone asked about stamping white on dark paper.  I personally like using Memories White Ink.  It gives a soft image, but I love it.  HERE is an example of it in action.  White Staz-On doesn't really stamp crisp and nice on cardstock for me.  I just use it for stamping on transparencies.

As for cleaning stamps?  Ha... I don't do a good job.  I usually clean them when I need to use them.  :)  I just use baby wipes, and for a good cleaning, I use Hero Arts' cleaner for everything.  It is wonderful.

I think that is it.  Let me know if I missed something!  Again, this is just my view on things.  I know others have different opinions.  A lot of it is just personal preferences.

As for the other questions asked, I will get to those tomorrow.  I have a new chair for Ikea that needs to be assembled.  Woohoo!
